Permanent residence in Canada is mostly a queue you have to qualify to stand in. Getting into the pool is the easy half. Being picked out of it is the part worth planning for.
About this work
Express Entry manages three. The Federal Skilled Worker Program is the one most people outside Canada use, and it weighs foreign work experience, education and language. The Canadian Experience Class is for people who have already worked in Canada, and it is the shortest route for anybody finishing a permit here. The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for qualified trades with an offer or a certificate of qualification.
The Provincial Nominee Program runs alongside them and is managed partly through the same pool. A nomination is the single largest thing that can happen to a score.
Choosing the wrong one is not usually fatal, because the pool assesses you against all of them at once. Entering the wrong occupation code is a different matter, because that is what the categories read.
The numbers
60 days to file once you are invited
Two clocks and a count. The 60 days is the one that ends a file, and it starts whether or not the documents that take longest have been ordered.
An invitation to apply is valid for 60 days. If it is not answered with a complete application it expires and the profile is removed from the pool. A profile not invited within 12 months expires on its own and has to be created again, with fresh language results if the old ones have run out.
What changed
Express Entry no longer runs mainly on score alone. Since 2023 the Minister has drawn from categories, and for 2026 there are ten of them, three announced for the first time. A profile that fits a category can be invited at a score well below a general round.
French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, science, technology, engineering and mathematics, trades, education, transport, physicians with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, researchers with Canadian work experience, and skilled military recruits.
Researchers with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, and skilled military recruits were added for 2026. The last of those invites eligible recruits with a job offer from the Canadian Armed Forces, including doctors, nurses and pilots.
You do not apply to a category. Eligibility is read off the occupation and the language results already in the profile, which is why an occupation entered loosely, or a language test taken once and never retaken, quietly removes a route that was open.

Written to be read once and acted on rather than to be rung about. Each answer is complete where the law allows a complete answer.
The Canadian Experience Class, and it is shorter than most people on a permit realise. It asks for one year of skilled work in Canada, or 1,560 hours, inside the three years before applying, in Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities category 0, 1, 2 or 3, gained while authorised to work. No educational credential assessment is required for eligibility, and no proof of funds.
The year has to be provable, not merely true. The reference letter is what proves it, and it has to state the hours per week, the dates, the duties and the wage. A letter that omits hours is the commonest reason a Canadian Experience Class application fails after an invitation.
If the permit runs out while the permanent residence application is being decided, a bridging open work permit keeps you working. It needs valid status and a valid work permit, or maintained status as a worker, or eligibility to restore, so it is applied for before the permit expires rather than after.
Language, and then language again. The Comprehensive Ranking System rewards test results steeply and non-linearly, so the difference between a good band and the next one up is often worth more points than another degree. It is also the only input most people can still change.
Age counts against everybody eventually and cannot be argued with. Education, Canadian work experience and a spouse's language results all carry weight, and a provincial nomination outweighs the lot.
Retaking a language test is the cheapest score improvement available and the one most often left undone. People spend a year waiting in the pool with results they took once.
Order the slow documents. Police certificates from countries you have lived in, and reference letters from former employers that state the hours, the dates, the duties and the wage, are the two things that take longest and cannot be hurried once the 60 days are running.
A reference letter that does not state hours per week is the commonest reason a Canadian Experience Class file is refused after invitation. The work was real and the letter cannot prove it.
Proof of funds has to be genuinely available and traceable. Money moved into an account shortly before filing invites questions about whose money it is, which is a different and worse problem than not having enough.
There is no appeal from an economic class refusal. The route is an application for leave and judicial review at the Federal Court, on 15 days for a decision made inside Canada or 60 days outside it, and the court asks only whether the decision was reasonable and the process fair.
Read the notes first. Most refusals at this stage are documentary rather than judgmental: the experience could not be verified from the letters filed, the funds were not shown to be available, or a family member was not declared. A refusal that is correct on the record is not worth challenging, and a fresh profile with the gap closed is faster.
Where the officer misread a letter that did say what was needed, or applied a requirement that does not exist, that is reviewable and the notes will show it.
Sixty days to submit a complete application. An incomplete one does not hold the invitation open. If the 60 days pass the invitation expires and the profile is removed from the pool, and you start again with whatever your score is by then.
Not necessarily. Most invitations now come from category-based rounds, and those are drawn from candidates whose occupation or language fits one of ten categories for 2026. A category round can invite at a score well below a general one. A provincial nomination is the other route and it adds heavily to a score.
Twelve months. If you are not invited in that time it expires and has to be created again. Language results have their own validity, so a profile recreated late sometimes cannot be completed until a test is retaken.
Bring your language results and your employment letters. Whether permanent residence in Canada is realistic on your current profile is usually clear in one meeting.
