How the firm is arranged
Which practice area covers your matter?
Immigration is the largest area of the practice by some distance, and the Federal Court work inside it is run by the lawyer rather than referred out. Personal injury, criminal and civil litigation are the three the firm is building out next.
Where a matter falls outside these, we say so and point you to somebody who handles it properly. A referral costs us a file and saves you a year.

What do people ask before they choose an area?

The ones that decide which area a matter belongs in, and whether it needs a lawyer or a licensed paralegal at all.
Do you need a lawyer or a paralegal?
Ontario defines what a licensed paralegal may do rather than leaving it open. Small Claims Court, tribunal hearings and Provincial Offences charges fall inside that scope, so paralegal representation handles them at a lower cost. Matters outside the scope, including Federal Court work on immigration refusals, are handled by our lawyer.
How quickly should you act?
Deadlines decide this more than anything else. A Federal Court application after an immigration refusal is generally 15 days for a decision made inside Canada and 60 days for one made outside it. A Provincial Offences charge has a date printed on the ticket. Family and notarial matters are less time critical, though a signed document is much harder to undo than an unsigned one.
What does each area actually cover?
Immigration covers refusals and Federal Court review, sponsorship, permits and refugee matters. Traffic covers Highway Traffic Act charges from speeding through to stunt driving. Family covers separation, parenting, support and property. Paralegal services cover Small Claims, tribunals and Provincial Offences. Notarisation covers affidavits, declarations and certified copies. Consultation covers the first assessment, including second opinions on a file another firm is running.
What falls outside these six areas?
Corporate transactions, wills and estates, personal injury and real estate closings. If your matter is one of those, say so on the telephone and you will be pointed to somebody who does that work, which is faster for you than a consultation that ends in a referral.
